Editor’s Note: The following message was sent as a letter to U.S. Soccer on Dec. 21, 2020.

Dear Mr. Fike (as liaison to the U.S. Soccer Nominating and Governance Committee of the Board),

As a National Association member of U.S. Soccer with more than 500,000 members in all 50 states, US Club Soccer is proud to nominate Cobi Jones as a candidate for Vice President of U.S. Soccer in conjunction with the election to be held at the 2021 U.S. Soccer AGM.

Cobi is, of course, very well known for his exploits at the highest level for our U.S. Men’s National Team. After first playing with distinction for our Olympic team during qualification, and then in the Olympic tournament in 1992, Cobi would go on to one of the greatest careers in the history of the program. He played in the FIFA men’s World Cup in 1994, 1998, and 2002, and retired having played more times for the USMNT than any other player in our history.

His path to the World Cup was not linear or traditional. In fact, Cobi was cut from numerous teams, never played for any of the youth national teams, and was a walk-on at UCLA. But through perseverance, commitment, and desire, Cobi became one of the most accomplished players in the history of the national team program and MLS.

Since retiring as a player, Cobi has worked as a coach and television analyst, but he has also devoted time to helping bring our game to children in under-served communities, both on his own initiative and in support of the efforts of the U.S . Soccer Foundation.

Cobi is well known as a man who is collaborative, cordial and genuine in his dealings with others, but he equally is unafraid to speak his mind and stand up for the things he believes in.

Additionally, we believe it is time for U.S . Soccer to make a comprehensive effort to promote greater diversity at every level of the game — and the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors seems a good place to begin that process.

For all of the reasons above, and because we are convinced he will be an outstanding national officer and international representative of U.S. Soccer, US Club Soccer is proud to nominate Cobi Jones for the position of U.S. Soccer Vice President.

Sincerely,

Mike Cullina
Chairman, US Club Soccer Board of Directors
